Keeping kids safe around dogs.
Hey everyone,
Let’s talk about child safety around dogs. There are many ways that can prevent any danger from happening, education is key. So, I wanted to talk about us parents and what we can do to stop possible injuries or even death. Being a parent, the safety of my 3 kids is extremely important, especially having a dog that used to not like kids at all. I worked really hard on providing him with many positive experiences around children before my wife and I decided to have kids.
I’m going to give you 3 easy steps on how we can make it safer for our children.
First, you have to educate your child on the right way they should interact with dogs.
Should they pet every dog? No.
What about your dog? Well, only if your dog is okay with it, and if they are ok, always be sure to supervise. Should your kids tease your dog, lay on top of them, or pretend they can ride it like a horse? Absolutely not. Why have your child in a situation where they may get hurt. And why would you allow this to happen? Teaching your children how to properly
engage with your dog will help you to avoid anything serious from happening.
Second, teach them about dogs body language. Do you know when a dog may be stressed? Here are some signs that your dog may be telling you something:
He/she is lip licking, yawning, or blinking. Teaching your kids what to watch out for will help them understand what your dog may be feeling.
Third, safe spots for your dog. What to do when your dog is getting upset? Does your dog have a safe place to get away in the house when he/she needs a break? This is important. I can tell you, my dog has 3 places. Dexter is a small dog, so I taught him to go under our couch when he needs space. We also have stairs that lead to the basement where it can be blocked off with a baby gate, we keep some of his toys there and his bed. Lastly, he’s got our bedroom upstairs with his bed in our walk in closet. He never gets placed in these spaces as a form of punishment. He actually enjoys being in his safe spots, it’s like his security blanket. And it’s perfect for when he needs a breather.
I hope you enjoyed this. Remember, it’s of upmost importance to keep our dogs safe and happy. And these were just a few of the steps you can do to ensure your kids are safe around your dog.
